Torben Rick makes a good point with this graphic depicting Organizational Culture devouring everything around it. I have often discussed with clients the impact culture can have both positively and negatively on their business. I use the analogy that culture is like the glue that binds the various aspects of your business together and without the appropriate culture your organization can fall apart and cease being effective.
My colleague Ken Cameron at Corporate CultureSHIFT has done a lot of work in this area, notably with the City of Calgary and Calgary Economic Development and based on his work he writes that ... '91% of executives view culture as very important at their firms, and 78% consider culture as one of the top 3 or 5 factors that affect their firms’ value.
Now that so many are working under stressful conditions culture matters more than ever. It's what keeps us connected when we're working remotely. And it's what keeps us trusting one another when we're side-by-side.
Yet most don't know what to do about it. Culture is an amorphous thing, a creature that has its own life, which seems completely beyond anyone’s control. It seems to emerge of its own accord and, for better or worse, it shapes those who enter its sphere of influence.
This doesn’t have to happen.'
